Political Poop '08
One of the major issues affecting this vote is the debate over a proposed 700-mile fence that would run along the U.S./Mexican boarder.
"The American public is closely divided but the two parties are not," said CNN polling director Keating Holland. "Fifty-eight percent of Democrats opposed a fence on the Mexican border, while 66 percent of Republicans favor one. Independents mildly favor a fence, by a 55 percent-44 percent margin."
Both candidates have been trying to reel in Hispanic voters speaking at the annual NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials) and today at the LULAC.
Obama said "This election could well come down to how many Latinos turn out to vote. And I'm proud that my campaign is working hard to register more Latinos and bring them into the political process." Source
I find it interesting that politics, and namely this presidential race, has been broken down into such simple terms: black vs. white, male vs. female, rich vs. poor; when there are so many other factors that need to be addressed. There are other groups in this country that have a voice and an opinion and could very well decide this race with their vote alone.
Both parties are walking a thin line in their attempts to gain the Latino vote and at the same time restrict the entrance of their Mexican brethren into the country…all at the cost of $3 million to tax payers, non-Latino and Latino alike.
Libertad! Viva la Mexico!
