Today's entry is one of my most FAVORITEST ladies in the whole wide world.
Ntozake Shange
She's best known for a play she wrote entitled for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf. The first time I ever heard of her or this play was in Dr. Jennings' (Regina Jennings=one of the grittiest chicks I EVER met...look her up) Intro. to African American Literature class. Anyway, she showed us the film adaptation in class and it was an absolute emotional rollercoaster. I laughed. I cried (and I don't mean silent tears. I mean full on sobbing and wretching). In this piece she speaks to the experiences of all women who live in a sphere where things like rape and abuse have become a rite of passage.
Once we saw the film we read Sassafras, Cypress, and Indigo which took a magical look on the lives and relationships between three sisters. It made me appreciate my own sister in a whole new way.
Ntozake is a true inspiration to me as a spirted writer and as a black woman. If you've never experienced any of her work I suggest you hit up your public library and get to reading. I can confidently say you won't regret it.
