The Hughes brothers, directors of the ’99 documentary “American Pimp”, are working on a drama series for HBO entitled “Gentlemen of Leisure”. The show will follow a 35-year old pimp in Oakland, CA who’s thinking about leaving the game.
“It’s about a guy who wants to get out but keeps getting sucked back in by the allure of the game and by extraneous circumstances that have to do with his family,” said Evan Reilly, a “Rescue Me” producer who will write the script.
“Gentlemen of Leisure” shows how the honor code that the established pimps live by will be destroyed by violent younger pimps who are coming “with their guns blazing, mixing prostitution with drugs and thievery,” Allen Hughes said. He added that the idea for the show came after several of their friends suggested they should make “American Pimp” into a drama series for HBO.
SourceI watched "American Pimp" and found it to be both entertaining and intriguing. However, I’m not sure how this will translate over into a drama series. Only time will tell I suppose.
